Telepractice

Telepractice: Text

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), speech telepractice or speech teletherapy is the delivery of speech therapy services at a distance in real-time and face-to-face through the use of technology (ASHA,n.d.). Telepractice connects clinician to client or clinician to clinician for assessment, treatment, and/consultation.

Research has shown it to be an effective means of speech therapy for adults and children with various speech and language disorders. It has also been proven effective in the delivery of early intervention using a parent coaching model and working with children with autism spectrum disorder.

Telepractice may not be effective for all clients due to varying factors, and therefore candidacy must be assessed by the speech-language pathologist. To receive speech teletherapy services, you are required to have:

  • Computer/iPad/tablet

  • High Speed Internet

  • A Quiet room

  • Reinforcers (e.g. toys, puzzles, etc.)
